Saline and silicone implants weigh approximately the same.<\/div><div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-d7bd5f9c-de7a-4df4-80a2-d7171ad47362\"><strong>Saline implants<\/strong>\u00a0are approximately half the cost of their silicone counterparts and allow a range of fill sizes for each implant. This is especially helpful when a patient has asymmetrical breasts and we\u2019re trying to make them more symmetrical. When silicone implants leak\/rupture, the fluid gets absorbed by your body without any side effects. However, saline implants run the risk of feeling like a bag of water and having visible rippling, especially in the cleavage area.<\/div><div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-60b61745-4340-4ac2-871f-151d754d78c3\"><strong>Silicone implants<\/strong>\u00a0usually don\u2019t have problems with rippling and feel much more natural. However, they have their own drawbacks. Silicone implants come in pre-filled sizes, so it is harder to correct breast asymmetry. Using this type of incision, placement of implants is technically more difficult and precludes the placement of excessively large silicone implants. Although traditionally a popular choice, it has fallen out of favor more recently due to concerns that these scars could potentially be visible when the arm is raised when wearing bikinis or tank tops.<\/div><div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-e5a2c9a1-cc36-4fc1-8946-0925ac0d39af\">Nipple incisions allow the scar to be hidden in the junction of the darker areola skin and lighter breast skin. Implant placement through this route requires the breast tissue to be divided. It also risks distorting the round shape of the nipple-areolar complex from asymmetrical nipple scarring.<\/div><div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-35b33b5e-1ebd-4b9f-a986-5d45b02bae0e\">Incisions in the inframammary fold are more conspicuous but can often be hidden behind a rejuvenated breast. Ultimately, no evidence was discovered linking silicone implants to breast cancer, later confirmed by a 2016 study.<\/div><h2 class=\"ql-heading\" data-block-id=\"block-f9a0dfc6-8cde-42f6-81db-709d85d79722\">Implant Illness Studies<\/h2><div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-8830ec3f-a8a7-4e99-b83d-58f146274c10\">However, a study in 2018 revealed that patients with Mentor brand silicone breast implants were 1.54 times more likely to receive a cancer diagnosis than the general population. The discovery was later attributed to a lack of diagnosis validation and selection bias. It is also crucial to remember that there is often a difference in demographics, lifestyle, and reproductive characteristics among patients with breast implants than the general population. Similarly, there was a link between patients with breast implants and increased lung cancer, which was later attributed to an increase in smokers among those with breast implants.<\/div><h2 class=\"ql-heading\" data-block-id=\"block-9d60290f-0691-453a-90ab-aeade3076f49\">Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma<\/h2><div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-0eff511b-8862-4b97-98bd-496144a0ed01\">Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma. The first case of breast implant-associated ALCL (BIA-ALCL) was in 1997, and in 2018, it was reported that there had been over 414 cases of BIA-ALCL since 2008, resulting in 9 deaths. Half of the patients in these cases had also undergone breast reconstruction surgery after breast cancer. While there is a link between breast implants and BIA-ALCL, the cause is not yet firmly established through research. Textured implants have been banned in France and Canada, and the FDA advised Allergen to recall their textured varieties. One theory is that the link between textured breast implants and BIA-ALCL could be bacterial, as the increased surface area and crevices on textured implants may create an ideal breeding ground for bacteria to grow. Implant rupture has also been said to cause connective tissue disease. However, two extensive studies in 2007 refuted those claims, finding that there is no connection between ruptured implants and connective tissue diseases.<\/div><div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-290c350a-30bf-446a-9c08-b3b48b74f6bb\">However, contradictory results emerged in a study of 100,000 patients over seven years; this study revealed double the amount of connective tissue diagnoses in those with implants vs. the general population.
